Health, energy and vitality are all important for your emotional and physical well-being, and one way of upping your energy and your health in one easy step is to eat foods that are full of antioxidants and nutrients – fruit are one such food. If you haven’t got a lot of time to prepare something like a fruit salad, why not try a smoothie? You can make them in the evening and then put them into the fridge, ready to drink the next day. If you leave the skins in the fruit, you’re also retaining a lot of the nutrients meaning that you can drink three or four of your daily fruit and vegetable portions in one sitting. Homemade smoothies also tend towards being lower in fat and calories than shop-bought ones. Read below for a selection of yummy smoothie recipes.

Pina Banana

This smoothie combines the classic flavors of a pina colada, just without the alcohol!

Ingredients:

  • 2 bananas
  • 1 8-ounce tin of pineapple chunks
  • 4 tbsp. coconut milk or coconut cream
  • Handful of ice cubes

Roughly chop the bananas and then blitz all of the ingredients together in a blender until smooth and creamy.

Broccoli Smoothie

This smoothie contains lots of your daily fruit and vegetable portions, and it’s delicious, too.

Ingredients:

  • 4 broccoli florets
  • 1 carrot
  • Handful of spinach leaves
  • 1 apple
  • 2 oranges
  • Orange juice

Roughly chop the broccoli and carrot. Peel the apple and oranges and remove the seeds and the core. Place everything into a blender and blitz until smooth, using the orange juice to dilute the mixture until it becomes thin enough to your liking.

Berry Blend

This is just one take on a yummy berry smoothie.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • ½ cup vanilla yoghurt

Roughly chop the banana and then place all of the ingredients into a blender. Blend until completely smooth and then serve nice and cold.

Banana Carrot Smoothie

Carrots are known for their brilliant nutritional properties and this smoothie makes the most of them whilst also being really tasty.

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 6 baby carrots
  • 2 cups of vanilla yoghurt
  • Handful of ice
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice
  • 12 ounces carrot juice

Place all of the ingredients into a blender and process until everything is completely smooth and creamy. For an extra bit of flavor, try adding the juice of half an orange.

Banana Papaya Smoothie

Papaya is a delicious tropical fruit and bananas give a wonderful creamy flavor and texture to everything that they’re paired with.

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 papaya
  • Handful of fresh spinach
  • 1 small tomato
  • ½ cup orange juice

Remove the skin and seeds from the tomato and the papaya. Roughly chop the ingredients and place everything into a blender. Mix until completely smooth and silky.

Avocado Smoothie

Avocados are lovely, smooth, silky fruits. Try them in the next smoothie you make.

Ingredients:

  • 2 avocados
  • 1 ½ cups of strawberries
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 3 ounces low fat milk
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg

Peel and stone the avocados. Chop them and place them into a blender along with all of the other ingredients. Blend everything together until smooth and creamy.

Ginger Smoothie

Ginger is a lovely natural healing ingredient and this smoothie would be perfect for any number of ailments, including motion sickness and migraines.

Ingredients:

  • 1 apple
  • 1 lemon
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup ice
  • 1 piece of fresh root ginger

Peel the apple and lemon and remove the core, pith and seeds from both of them. Roughly chop the ginger. Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth.
