Kidney Stone Medications

Kidney stones are very troublesome invaders in the human body. When these stones settle in the kidneys, it can cause a lot of symptoms and health problems like bleeding urine, pus in the urine, burning urine passage, painful lower back, painful groin and abdomen, fevers, chills, and nausea. These are very undesirable and uncomfortable, and many people are unable to tolerate the pain brought about by the attack of kidney stones.

The formation of these stones begin when the blood starts getting higher levels of certain substances like calcium oxalate, uric acid, xanthine, or cystine. When these substances are too abundant in the blood, although the kidney is able to filter them from the blood, it is no longer able to send them all to the urinary bladder. This results to the accumulation of the substances in the kidneys, and when they grow in number, they eventually form solid particles, which are then called stones.

These stones can form in the kidneys over the years but not show any symptoms. However, when quite a large stone is passed from the kidney to the ureter, this causes the blockage to the urinary tract which then results to the pain in the lower back extending all the way to the lower abdomen and groin. This is also where the bleeding and pus begins, since the blockage causes abrasions and infections in the urinary tract.

In order to treat the problem, there are a lot of treatments available in the market as well as at home. However, it is always important to consult a doctor first before taking any drugs, since self-medication is never advisable.

Some of the most common medications taken for the relief of kidney stone pains include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other painkillers. However, these drugs are only used for the relief of kidney stone pain, and not for the problem itself.

Most drugs used for the treatment of this problem are prescription medications. Potassium citrate is one of these, which works by making the urine more alkaline and reducing the formation of stones in the kidneys. Magnesium citrate is used for treating people with kidney stones that developed them due to impaired intestinal absorption. Citrates should not be taken with any other medication, as well as those with ulcers.

Phosphates are also effective in allowing the body to reabsorb the calcium from the kidneys and prevent them from solidifying, as well as preventing the breakdown of bone materials which causes the release of calcium in the bloodstream. Some of these include sodium phosphate, potassium phosphate, and cellulose phosphate.

Cholestyramine is another medication, wherein the active drug binds with oxalate in the blood, preventing the formation of excessive levels of oxalate in the blood and redirecting them from the kidneys. However, it is known to be a contributor of calcium loss as well as osteoporosis.

For uric acid stones, sodium bicarbonate medications are used to make the urine less acidic. But the sodium in the drug restricts it for people who need to avoid sodium in their diet. Potassium citrate is also effective for uric acid stone sufferers. Allopurinol is an effective reducer of uric acid levels, but it does not help in the reduction of calcium oxalate in the blood, and xanthine stones may be developed from the long-term use of the drug.

Struvite and cystine stones also require different medications. Acetohydroxamic acid, organic acids, and aluminum hydroxide gel are used for eliminating struvite stones, while d-penicillamine, alpha-mercaptopropionylglycine (tiopronine), and captopril are for cystine stones.

These drugs are mostly prescription medications and cannot be bought without a doctor’s note, and an individual should be informed whether they would be beneficial for the health. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow health guidelines in managing and treating kidney stones.
