There are a lot of digestion problems but indigestion is the most upfront of all of them. It is simply characterized by the inability of the person to digest the foods that he has ingested. The problem is medically known as dyspepsia. The problem may be caused by various factors, and it is very uncomfortable especially because it attacks whenever you eat.

The symptoms of indigestion include a painful upper abdomen, feeling of fullness even if you’ve only eaten a small amount, bloated feeling in the stomach, gassiness, nausea, and heartburn. It can be caused by GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, or by a peptic ulcer. At some point, it may also be a symptom for colon cancer. There are also other causes of dyspepsia like taking medications such as calcium antagonists, nitrates, theophylline, bisphosphonates, corticosteroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

To treat dyspepsia, you should first determine the cause of the problem. Afterwards, indigestion remedies may be established. The easiest way to cure dyspepsia is by changing the diet. There are certain foods that can aggravate the problem, and there are also those that can help cure it.

Some of the most important diet changes to improve indigestion problems include reducing the amount of food intake and chewing the food properly. When you don’t chew food properly, the large chunks may be more difficult to digest, thus causing the problem. Eating too much also makes it difficult for the stomach to digest all the food in it. Eating small amounts of food frequently may help ease hunger without causing indigestion problems.

Avoid alcohol as it is an acidic beverage which may aggravate dyspepsia. Smoking is also an unadvisable activity since it weakens the lower esophageal muscles, worsening heartburn which is one associated medical problem with dyspepsia.

Drink plenty of water at regular times of the day to help with getting rid of heartburn. Drinking herbal tea is also good for digestion, as tea is helpful in assimilating the foods being digested in the stomach. The warmth of the tea also helps breaking down foods faster and aids the stomach to digest food easier.

Even the clothing has something to do with indigestion. Wearing tight-fitting clothes makes you contract your stomach, resulting to the compression of the abdomen which contributes to dyspepsia. Practice wearing loose clothes and try walking down every meal you take. Don’t lie down or sleep after eating as it slows down the digestion process and it also makes the stomach acids rise up to the esophagus, making it difficult for digestion to occur normally.

Lemon juice, orange juice, grape juice, apple juice, and pineapple juice are some effective fruit juices that help digestion. These juices should be fresh and natural, though. The acids in these fruits are good acids that help in the digestive processes, preventing dyspepsia and its undesirable effects.

Bananas are natural antacids that help neutralizing stomach acids. Together with apples and grapes, they can be eaten to aid digestion and ease the pain brought about by dyspepsia. Cardamom, ginger, licorice, and aloe vera are other herbal remedies for indigestion.

You can also take medication like antacids, proton pump inhibitors, H2 inhibitors, antiflatulents, and prokinetic agents. Some of these are prescription drugs, though, and they require the advice of a medical professional before intake. Consulting a doctor is a helpful way to cure dyspepsia so that you will know what exactly is your medical problem and what best treatments you should take.

If you have dyspepsia or if you feel like you have the symptoms of indigestion, try out some of the home remedies and lifestyle alterations first. If they don’t work, that’s when you should consult a health provider. Remember that your health is the most important possession that you have, and you should always be cautious when it comes to your body and its conditions.
