People today have become very conscious with the products that they use. Because of the development in science and research, scientists have discovered different substances and objects that could be harmful to the body. Studies have been made and conclusions have been done, the verdict is final. Some of the substances found to have very harmful effects on the body are lead, mercury, bisphenol A, and other substances banned by health organizations.

There are still some substances that are found in products available in the market that have not been completely proven to have harmful effects on the human health. However, these substances may show side-effects when used. One of these substances is hydroquinone.

Hydroquinone is known as an ingredient of skin whitening and exfoliating products. It works by deteriorating the production of the enzyme tyrosinase which is responsible for the production of melanin. When melanin pigments are inhibited, the skin cannot produce dark pigments, resulting to a fairer complexion.

Products with hydroquinone as the active ingredient are usually effective and show results in a few weeks. Dark skin will turn whiter and the complexion becomes fairer. Although it is guaranteed effective, hydroquinone has side-effects that cause discomfort to the users. It makes the skin itchy and reddish. More severe effects include burning of the skin and swelling of the affected area. For more sensitive skin, more dangerous conditions may occur. The worse effect that long-term use of hydroquinone could have is ochronosis. It is a condition where blue-black pigments appear on the skin. It is relatively rare but the chance of getting it is not impossible.

Using products with hydroquinone is a choice one should think over. Firstly, if the person has history of skin sensitivity, the product should not be used. Secondly, a dermatologist should first be consulted so that the person will know if it is advisable for her or not to use hydroquinone. The substance may cause extreme irritation so careful use should be observed. Do not apply the substance on irritated, sunburned, dry, wounded or chapped skin. A small amount should only be used. Excessive application can lead to very bad side-effects.

Because of these health issues that hydroquinone has presented, many health organizations around the world have banned the use of the product. The members of the European Union have completely declared the substance prohibited from use in any product. The United States Food and Drug Administration has also banned all cosmetic and skin care products with hydroquinone since 2006. The substance is a strong chemical compound that can cause harmful side-effects and even complications to the health.

The biggest issue regarding hydroquinone is its possibility of being a carcinogen. Carcinogens are cancer-causing substances that are very harmful to the human body. Intake and use of such substances could develop cancer and the user’s life could be significantly threatened. Hydroquinone has been proven to be a carcinogen, although the test has only been made on animals, and the countries Japan, U.S.A., and the European Union have banned the product from being sold in their markets.

People want solutions for their skin problems. They use all the products they can find in the store and try them until they get the results that they want. However, without adequate knowledge, product exploration can lead to endangerment of the health. It is important to first study and research about the components and ingredients of the products that you are going to use on your skin or take orally. Products which directly affect the human body should not be overlooked. Finally, the advice of a medical professional should always be taken into consideration because without sufficient knowledge, what we know to be a cure may cause our most serious disease.
