How to Treat Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are extremely uncomfortable to have, but there are a lot of ways to eliminate them. Starting with the natural remedies all the way to the surgical methods specifically developed for the purpose, we will study the different ways that can be used to eliminate, prevent, and stop the formation of kidney stones.

The diet is the most important factor in the production of stones. Oxalate-rich foods should be completely avoided. Since the most common source of kidney stones is the calcium oxalate crystal, the food sources from which calcium oxalate can be derived should be eliminated in the diet. Spinach is a very high source of oxalic acids, as well as whole wheat flour, chickpea, peas, soy beans, beets, cauliflower, turnips, carrots, almonds and coconuts. Tomatoes, rhubarb, eggplant, summer squash, sweet potatoes, peanuts, blackberries, strawberries, parsley and cocoa are also some of the foods with high levels of oxalic acid.

However, calcium is not an actual source of the stones. In fact, people with low calcium levels in the body are more likely to develop stones in the kidney than those who have normal calcium levels. Do not stop eating calcium-rich foods like dairy products, but eliminate calcium supplements if you are taking any. But always remember to eat anything in moderation, including calcium-rich foods.

Purine-rich foods are also advised to be avoided if your stones are from high levels of uric acid. Some of them include anchovies, kidneys, liver, sardines, sweet breads, asparagus, bacon, beef, cauliflower, chicken, codfish, crab, duck, halibut, ham, lamb, lentils, lima beans, lobster, mushrooms, oatmeal, oysters, peas, pork, salmon, shellfish, spinach, trout, tuna, and turkey. But even if you have calcium oxalate stones, it is also advised to avoid purine-rich foods or at least eat them in moderation.

Water is also an excellent solvent for kidney stones. Drink 12-15 glasses of water in order to effectively dissolve the stones in the kidneys. Also, lemonade and orange juice are also effective stone eliminators. The citrate and citric acid in citrus fruits are good inhibitors of stone formation in the kidneys, and the highest concentrations of citrate have been found in lemonade and orange juice. Drinking 5-8 glasses of whichever preferred juice per day is a good routine in managing kidney stones.

Exercising regularly is an important method to eliminate the stones in the kidneys. Sweating is a must, and having a regular workout routine is also a good way of dissolving kidney stones. Eating unhealthy foods, sweets, and foods with many preservatives should not be tolerated. Stay on a healthy diet plan, a healthy lifestyle, and avoid anything that may be considered unhealthy, even stress and other unhealthy habits and practices.

There is also a clinical method used to treat kidney stones. ESWL or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy is a clinical procedure that is done in the objective to shatter the stones in the kidneys. High-frequency sound waves are sent through the body which shatters the kidney stones, making them small enough to pass through the urine with ease. Sometimes, a stent is used to keep the ureter open and prevent pain in passing stones. Although the procedure does not cause significant physical damage, it takes several days for full recovery, and it may also have a tendency to cause diabetes or hypertension, resulting to dangerous health problems.

If you have been diagnosed with kidney stones or if you suspect that you have them, you should be aware about the do’s and dont’s in suffering the disease. And like any other medical problem, living healthy is the best way to prevent it from getting worse, as well as following these guidelines. Eventually and hopefully, the stones in your kidneys would be eliminated.
