Gout Pain Treatment

Gout is a very undesirable condition which is caused by the settling of uric acid crystals on a joint. High levels of uric acid in the bloodstream results to the accumulation and formation of the said acid into solid form, and when the particles of uric acid solidify, they settle on a joint, oftentimes on the big toe. When this happens, the joint becomes swollen, reddens, and sometimes pus can even come out of the skin area of the affected joint. Long-term use of NSAIDs is also unadvisable as it can result to many side effects like ulcers, dependence, nausea, and others.

You can always use alternating cold and warm compresses to relieve the pain of gout. Apply cold compress for 10 minutes, and then apply warm compress for the next ten minutes, and repeat the process until relief is achieved. This is a good daily routine which you can do several times a day, especially before going to bed so that you won’t be bothered by gout pains.

There are also some natural methods that you can use to cure gout. The most important of these is to avoid foods which have high levels of purine. Animal proteins, shellfish, anchovies, animal organs like kidneys, livers, sweetbreads, brains, and sardines are very high in purine. These foods should be avoided at all costs. Others like asparagus, lentils, lima beans, mushrooms, peas, spinach, trout, and tuna are also moderately high in purine content. These should be eaten in very small amounts and not daily.

Some foods can also be beneficial for gout. Cherries are perfect examples of these, and they are excellent anti-inflammatory agents that reduce the swelling of the joint and ease the pain of gout. Eating 20-25 cherries a day can show great improvement and provide ease for most gout sufferers.

If you have gout and you took one of these advices and experienced relief, don’t be too happy about it. Even if the pain is gradually decreased by these solutions, they do not directly answer the problem that is brought about by the disease.
