Gout is a common arthritic condition that causes inflammation of the joints, especially in the big toe and the base of the toes. It causes swelling and pain within the inflamed joint and is thought to affect one in 100 people, making it really more common than you might think. Joints that gout can affect include: the heels, elbows, arches of your feet, ankles, wrists and fingers. Gout is more common in men than women and tends to affect people between the ages of 30 to 60.

Symptoms of Gout

The symptoms of gout include:

  • Severe pain in the inflamed joint
  • Tenderness when the skin is touched
  • Red and shiny skin around the inflamed joint
  • A mild fever
  • White lumps visible beneath the skin which are the urate crystals that cause gout

Gout usually strikes for a few weeks at a time and goes away without treatment, although it can be terribly painful if left untreated. Gout that is left untreated or gout that develops complications could cause gout to attack several of your joints at one time. Kidney stones and kidney damage are also relatively common.

So How Can I Treat Gout Naturally?

Gout is a tricky thing to treat as it is very difficult to get to the root cause of the problem. However, there are a few things that you can do at home to reduce your gout symptoms and help to prevent gout attacks in the future.

  • Raise and rest the joint. Perhaps the most important step in treating and preventing gout is to adequately rest the joint. Keep it elevated so that any swelling can calm down and steer clear of any physical strenuous activity. If possible, rest the joint at all times until swelling and inflammation has died down a little bit.
  • Keep the joint cool. One of the best ways to minimize swelling and inflammation is to wrap ice cubes in a tea towel and to place the ice against the inflamed joint. Don’t place ice cubes directly against the skin as this could damage it. Hold the cubes against the skin for twenty minutes and then if you need to repeat it later on, allow the skin to return to its usual temperature first.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Urate crystals, which are what cause gout, are more likely to develop and grow if you don’t drink enough water. If your body is dehydrated, you are far more likely to develop gout so combat this by keeping your body hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. If you are particularly active, you may need to drink more.
  • Keep away from alcohol. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect so it has exactly the same detrimental effects on your body as not drinking enough water does. The most dehydrating alcohols are stout, beer, port and fortified wines, so make a point to steer clear of these drinks especially.
  • Do regular exercise. Regular exercise can help break down urate crystals. Regular exercise in conjunction with a healthy diet also helps the body to lose weight, which can be a precursor to developing gout.
  • Avoid foods that contain purines. Although you may not know what purines are, your doctor should be able to provide you with an adequate list of foods that do contain it. Eating lots of these types of foods could cause you to develop gout or bring on an attack of gout. Foods to avoid include liver, seafood, kidney, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, asparagus, cauliflower, lentils, mushrooms, oatmeal and spinach.
