Ulcerative colitis is one of the medical problems that people find difficulty in resolving. This may be because they aren’t very familiar with the problem yet. What is ulcerative colitis?

From the word colitis, this disorder can be defined as the inflammation of the colon. From the word ulcerative, it can be defined as a medical problem which involves the appearance of ulcers or hollow sores on the colonic walls. In the simplest sense, the colon swells because of the open sores and abrasions on the colonic walls, thereby causing this disorder. There are a lot of causes of this disorder.

Causes of Ulcerative Colitis

  1. Genetics – it has been found that if ulcers run in the family, there is a higher chance for an individual to acquire ulcerative colitis.
  2. Diet – if the diet of an individual contains many substances which can injure the colon such as highly acidic foods, or if there is a very low fiber content in the diet, there is a high chance of ulcerative colitis to form.
  3. Autoimmune disease – an autoimmune disease is characterized by the abnormal attack of the antibodies to the body’s own organs. In this case, the antibodies can be attacking the colon, causing sores on the colon walls to appear.

Foods to Eat for Ulcerative Colitis

  1. Small amounts of meat will be helpful as long as it is cooked and chewed properly.
  2. Fish is also a major substitute for many protein losses during ulcerative colitis diet. Make sure to eat fish that’s well-cooked and is free from artificial flavoring, spices, and other ingredients which may be included in the list above.
  3. Chicken and other poultry meats are also acceptable as long as they are cooked without the addition of any spices and flavorings mentioned above.
  4. Only eat fruits and vegetables which have been completely peeled. Do not eat raw vegetables and hard fruits. It’s better to juice these fruits and vegetables to make it easier for the colon to digest them and pass them through.
  5. Your food intake with oils can be acceptable as long as it is not too much. Margarine and olive oil are ideal to keep the colon lubricated.
  6. White rice is also good fiber for ulcerative colitis. It is not like whole wheat that clogs up the colon without going digested. It can be broken down and it is also an excellent source of carbohydrates that your body needs for strength and stamina. Other softer fibers such as oat bran and porridge are also good sources of carbs.
