Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow from the muscle layers in the womb. Fibroids can also be known as uterine fibroids, fibromyomas or myomas. Fibroids can vary in size and can be anywhere from the size of a bean to the size of a melon.

Who Gets Fibroids?

Surprisingly, 20% of women will develop fibroids at some point in their lives. They are most common in women between 30 and 50, and they are more common in overweight or obese women than normal-sized women.

There are four types of fibroids and any woman can develop any type. Intramural fibroids are the most common type, and they are located in the uterus walls. Subserosal fibroids are equally as common and are located on the outside of the uterus walls. They can become fairly large and they can develop into stalks. The two rarer types of fibroids are submucosal fibroids and cervical fibroids.

What are the Symptoms of Fibroids?

Most women have absolutely no symptoms, and many women will not know that they’re suffering with fibroids. However, if symptoms do develop, you can expect to experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Anemia, characterized by fatigue and decreased energy
  • Backache, typically in the lower back
  • Constipation
  • Period-like pains in the lower abdomen, particularly if the fibroids are large
  • Going to the toilet often
  • Heavy, painful periods
  • Pain in the legs
  • Pain during sex
  • Swelling in the lower abdomen
  • Fertility problems

Treatment of Fibroids

Fibroids are notoriously difficult to treat and if they are presenting no symptoms, the individual affected may opt to have no treatment at all. If treatment is needed, it is usually with medication or surgery, although fibroids can be shrunk by following a certain diet.

There are a number of foods that you can eat in order to naturally shrink your fibroids, and they are as follows:

  • Organic foods. Eating organic means that you are not ingesting pesticides, which are a known cause of fibroids.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables. Try to eat dark green vegetables as they naturally contain a lot of iron – which is great for fighting fibroids.
  • Foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin C. Both of these vitamins are very useful in treating fibroids, so eat plenty of egg yolks, milk, fortified dairy and citrus fruits. Vitamin C is also found in grapes and cranberries, so be sure to include these in your diet.
  • For women suffering with anemia as a result of their fibroids, they should increase their intake of vegetables such as spinach and kale as well as their intake of molasses, nuts and seeds, bran and yeast as all of these foods are rich in iron, which should help with their anemia symptoms.
  • Foods that naturally contain lots of anti-inflammatory properties. Anti-inflammatory foods are known to shrink the size of fibroids, so increase your intake of foodstuffs such as cumin, turmeric, honey, lemon, hops, rosemary and oats. Use the spices to flavor other foods such as spinach or beans to give yourself an extra fibroid-fighting boost.
  • Foods containing phytoestrogen, which is a natural form of weak estrogen that helps to fight the effects of excess estrogen in the body – believed to be one of the causes of fibroids. Foods such as brown rice, oats, buckwheat, oily fish, nuts, flaxseeds, soy and other non-dairy products should all help fight fibroids as they contain the key phytoestrogen ingredient.

Steer clear of red meat such as beef and ham as they are associated with an increased risk of fibroids. Eating red meat increases your risk of taking in xenoestrogens, a compound known to increase the risk of fibroids.
