Cholesterol Range

One of the most important chemicals compounds in the body is cholesterol, and it has a number of functions. Firstly, it is found in the cell membranes of all humans and animals. Its major role is to maintain permeability and fluidity of the cells. It is also important in manufacturing bile, steroid hormones, and fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A, D, E, and K. However, like most substances found in the body, excessive amounts of cholesterol may not be healthy.

Hypercholesterolemia is a medical condition where LDL or low-density lipoproteins are high in number while HDL or high-density lipoproteins are low. LDL is the type of cholesterol which has negative effects on the body, and having high concentrations of this substance is a great risk factor in having cardiovascular diseases. For that matter, LDL has been named as bad cholesterol.

On the other hand, HDL is called good cholesterol because it helps in many major cell functions and it also helps keep the heart healthy and away from possible cardiovascular problems that LDL may bring. This is because HDL removes unwanted cholesterol from the cells, eliminating these unhealthy substances and allowing better function of the body.

There are also other forms of cholesterol which may also bring about unwanted effects in the body. These are the triglycerides, which are major components of VLDL or very-low-density lipoproteins, and their effects can be worse than LDL at equal levels. If you would organize the three cholesterol forms, it would be beneficial to have HDL as the most abundant, and LDL and triglycerides can even be completely eliminated to create a better cellular environment in the body.

The cholesterol range of an individual varies depending on his health conditions. If he is normal, then his cholesterol levels can be measured in the normal ranges. However, if a person has history of cardiovascular diseases, this makes him a member of the possible risk group which should monitor the cholesterol levels more aptly. But if a person already has heart problems, he is automatically a member of the high risk group, and the levels of cholesterol need to be as minimal as possible.

Every type of cholesterol has a minimal, borderline, and high value. For LDL, the minimal range is from 100 mg/dL lower. An amount of LDL up to 129 mg/dL is acceptable, but once it hits 130 mg/dL, this is now borderline for the normal level. LDL is declared high when it reached 160 mg/dL, and 190 mg/dL would be dangerous already.

Triglycerides, on the other hand, have a higher range. Normal or safe amounts of triglyceride have a level of 149 mg/dL and lower. 150 mg/dL would be borderline, and 200 mg/dL would be high. When it reaches 500 mg/dL, this is a very high amount already. For triglycerides and LDLs, the lesser amount is always better. It’s even better if their amount is zero, but that’s virtually impossible.

As for HDL, the higher the amount of it is, the better it can do for the body. There’s no limit to the amount of HDL, but there is an unsafe level of low HDL. Less than 50 mg/dL could be dangerous and lead to heart diseases, while 60 mg/dL is the starting line of protective HDL that prevents cardiovascular disorders.

Knowing your cholesterol levels can be very beneficial for your health. So if you know how to have it measured, or if there’s a clinic near you that does cholesterol measurement, try having one every once in a while to keep yourself updated with your health condition. That way, you will be able to correct what’s wrong in your cholesterol levels and improve it over time, allowing the prevention of any possible health risks.
