Acid reflux disease is a common disorder that is usually relatively mild, although the symptoms can be very uncomfortable. More than 60 million Americans will experience acid reflux at least once a month and symptoms of acid reflux will usually occur after eating a large meal or when bending or lifting a heavy object. Certain foods exacerbate the symptoms of acid reflux and so sufferers should steer clear of these foods where possible: garlic, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, carbonated drinks, peppermint and fatty foods.

Acid reflux disease can cause a variety of symptoms, but the most common symptoms are as follows:

Heartburn – heartburn is a burning pain or a discomfort that can move up from your stomach to the middle of your chest or abdomen. Heartburn is also known as acid indigestion, and it can be an incredibly painful sensation. The pain can also move up into your throat and this pain is actually the acid making its way back up your esophagus and into your throat – this is why it can feel like a burning pain or sensation. Despite its name, heartburn does not affect your heart.

Dyspepsia – this is the general term for stomach discomfort although it is also a syndrome. Dyspepsia is a general problem, but it can come in the form of nausea, burping, nausea specifically after eating, vomiting after meals, stomach bloating, stomach fullness, upper abdominal pain and general discomfort in the stomach area.

Regurgitation – this is a common symptom of acid reflux and it is the term for the sensation of acid backing up into your throat or mouth. Regurgitation of acid can cause a very unpleasant taste in your mouth that is sour and bitter. You could also experience a wet burp or you could vomit along with the regurgitation.

These symptoms of acid reflux could be a sign that stomach acid has inflamed your esophagus. When this happens, the stomach acid could really damage the lining of the esophagus and cause it to bleed. Although the majority of acid reflux symptoms are relatively harmless and not usually serious, don’t ignore them as if left without treatment, you could develop a number of other more serious symptoms and you could find that acid reflux begins to affect you during sleep.

There are a number of risk factors for acid reflux disease, so if you minimize these risk factors and make a few lifestyle changes, you could be well on your way to reducing your risk of acid reflux.

Risk Factors for Acid Reflux Disease

One common cause of acid reflux is something called a hiatal hernia. This hernia prevents your diaphragm from being able to keep your acid in your stomach where it belongs, and instead the acid can move up your esophagus causing symptoms of acid reflux.

Other common risk factors for acid reflux include:

  • Eating overly large meals
  • Lying down or bending over immediately after a meal
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Snacking close to bedtime, especially on the foods mentioned above
  • Eating any of the foods mentioned above
  • Drinking certain drinks, such as alcohol, caffeine and any carbonated drinks
  • Smoking
  • Pregnancy
  • Taking muscle relaxers or other medication

The good thing about these risk factors is that for the most part, you can prevent acid reflux from happening by eating healthy food, not eating after 7pm and quitting smoking if you are a smoker. If these lifestyle changes don’t work for you and you still suffer with acid reflux, go to your doctor.
