A Healthier Lifestyle: How to Get There

We all want to achieve a healthy lifestyle – full of exercise, eating well and taking care of ourselves. However, with all of the stress of our daily lives, that can be a little bit difficult to achieve. Don’t worry – you’re not alone. I give you some tips to follow to work your way to that healthier lifestyle, one step at a time.

Drink Green Tea

We’ve all heard this one –  but green tea is actually fantastic for your health. It’s full of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients, and is far better for you than traditional caffeine-rich tea. Drinking green tea is also known to enhance your skin, giving you a glowing complexion. If you don’t like the flavor of plain green tea, try enhancing it with a few tsp. of honey or a dash of lemon juice to brighten the flavor. Try to drink at least two cups a day to feel the effects.

Smile & Talk

Be outgoing – smile at someone every time you leave the house. Smiling at someone means that they’re likely to smile back at you, instantly making you feel happier. Try to socialize as much as possible and make contacts with new people and old friends alike. If you have a trusted support network of friends and you suffer from a negative life event, the support you already have in place will be able to help you get over what’s happened. If you haven’t got a support structure, you’re far more likely to sink into depression. In fact, studies show that people who are outgoing are 50% less likely to develop dementia and other psychological problems.

Don’t Smoke – or Quit Smoking

We all know this, but smoking is incredibly bad for your health – even if you don’t suffer from any major health problems. In fact, it’s estimated that people who smoke live for ten years less than people who don’t smoke. If you’re already a smoker, don’t despair – the damage that you’ve done to your body will repair itself within around 18 months of you giving up the cigarettes for good. Your skin and hair will also thank you for it, becoming brighter and more glowing as soon as you stop smoking.

Get Moving

If you don’t do much exercise, you should probably start. I’m not talking hours of exercising every day – half an hour here and there will be enough to make you feel and look better. Try doing things that don’t actually feel like exercise – dance around your bedroom, go swimming, play on a fitness game on a games console or take your dog for a walk. If you want to get serious about exercise, think about getting a personal trainer. They don’t actually cost that much, and your trainer will be able to come up with a fitness plan that’s suited to your needs. Exercise will increase your circulation, giving you a glowing complexion, and you could lose a bit of weight, too.

Sleep

You need to have eight hours of sleep a night – this sleep is absolutely vital to the renewal of cells, as well as the longevity of them. However, most people don’t get this – they may get around five or six, which can cause bad skin, a greyish complexion, and a feeling of fatigue all day. If you find it difficult to get sleep, try to establish a routine by going to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. Keep everything out of the bedroom that’s not to do with sleep – things like televisions, laptops and games consoles should all be kept in your living spaces, not your bedroom. If you still have trouble, try some natural sleep aids such as lavender oil, hot milk, and a warm bath before bed.

Cut the Junk

If you’re particularly prone to eating junk food or ready-made food, try to cut down your intake. You don’t have to cut everything out straight away – try phasing out the fatty foods over the weeks so that it doesn’t seem like a big shock. Make swaps – things like skim milk instead of full-fat milk, cooking spray instead of olive oil and low-fat instead of full-fat products. Eating junk food or food that contains a lot of fat plays havoc with your complexion and hair, making skin greasy and prone to spots. Increase your intake of veggies and cut out the fat, and your skin will become clearer and more glowing in no time.
